VITACA TASTING CASE

Viticulture has been present in the history of Andújar since time immemorial. In the 17th century vineyards were concentrated in the areas known as Peñallana, La Alcaparrosa and Los Majuelos

Each house had its own winery and cellar. This fact gave rise to name the houses of the sierra "Viñas". In the mid-twentieth century, there were a total of 602 hectares of vineyards in the area of Viñas de Peñallana, "which was yesterday."

At present, the winery Viñas Tintas Capellanías, due to the interest shown by the winegrower and winemaker José Luis Navarro Cruz, tries to recover and resume a part of the millenary cultural tradition of wine in the area.

The vineyards are located in the vicinity of the Natural Park of the Sierra de Andújar and the Sanctuary of Our Lady Virgen de la Cabeza, specifically on the road to the Alcaparrosa, known as Pago de Capellanías and/or Viñas de Peñallana. The orography of the site: 600 m altitude, sandy soils and the orientation of the vineyard are the perfect combination to give the wine a body and character, defined by the French as "le terrain" ("the land").

The spectacle of colors and scents due to the diverse flora and fauna of the local Mediterranean forest, are influential elements in the development of the aromatic complexity of this wine, which is also influenced by its richness.

The varieties grown are Tempranillo, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Merlot and some centenary vines, such as the Jaén Tinta variety, remnants of the wine-making splendor of the area in the 18th-19th centuries.
