Situated in the basin of the river Boeza, in an environment of peace and tranquility, Is located the Monastery of San Miguel. The first references date back to the year 998. The Infanta Sancha made it a female monastery under the Benedictine Rule and in the 13th century the monastery became Cistercian. This order required as an indispensable condition the location in a solitary place that favored the life of union with God, but the feminine condition made advisable the nearby presence of some population.
The "ora e labora" of monastic life has in the temple one of its poles and the serene center of time. The Cistercian community of San Miguel is the most prosperous and numerous in the lands of Leon. The cloistered life means a desire to focus on silence as a way of perfection. The nuns dedicate their schedule to prayer and work.
"And that eternity touches us with the finger of silence and the serene joy of white Cistercian living."
