Isoflavones are bioflavonoids with a structure and activity similar to estrogens (without adverse effects), which is why they are called phytoestrogens due to their plant origin. In the male, isoflavones act as inhibitors of 5 alpha-reductase, the enzyme responsible for transforming testosterone into dihydrotestosterone.
