Propolis is the generic name for a resinous substance collected by bees from the resins and secretions that cover the buds of poplar, birch, oak, wild chestnut and other trees, especially conifers, found in the vicinity of the hive site. The word propolis is derived from the Greek: pro- (for or in defense), and polis- (the city); that is, defense of the city (beehive in this case). Bees use it as a building material, to protect the hive, and as an antimicrobial preservative, to protect the hive against bacteria and viruses. Bees even embalm the bodies of mice and butterflies that may have entered the hive, thus preventing their putrefaction. It is their material for keeping the hive aseptic.
Its exact transformation by the bees is not known, although it is admitted that it is due to the incorporation of salivary enzymes and elements of pollen digestion.
It is a dark yellow or brown substance that crumbles easily when cold, is malleable at 21ºC and melts at 66ºC and melts at 66ºC. When melted it gives off a pleasant aromatic odor.
