The South Ridge Syrah 2022 stands out for its vibrant color, with deep tones of purple and magenta. On the nose, it offers a charming aroma that evokes a freshly baked cherry pie, accentuated with floral notes of lilac, white pepper, and Christmas spices, characteristic of the best Rhône-style wines.
In the mouth, it is juicy and spicy, with a notable balance between freshness and concentration. The inclusion of a small percentage of Mourvèdre enhances the spicy notes, while the Viognier adds a delicate floral elegance.
The grapes for this wine come from carefully selected vineyards in the Adelaida, Estrella, and Creston districts within Paso Robles. In Adelaida, the vines grow in limestone soils that bring freshness, flavors of blackberry, white pepper, and a touch of sandalwood. In Estrella, the warmer vineyards contribute notes of black cherry and black tea leaves. Lastly, the high-altitude vineyards in Creston bring exceptional dark color and intense concentration of blue fruit.
The 2022 climate presented unique challenges and benefits. Scarce rainfall and a hot summer led to accelerated ripening, but the climatic relief in September allowed the grapes to develop an ideal balance of sugars and acidity.
The J. Lohr South Ridge Syrah is fermented in stainless steel tanks and undergoes a complete malolactic fermentation, which softens its texture. Its aging for 12 months in oak barrels and puncheons (3% new) gives it a spicy character and well-integrated wood notes.
