Ricard Pastis , is a French anise liqueur, and often simply identified as Ricard. It is a aniseed based on anise, licorice and herbs of Provence created by Paul Ricard in 1932. Today, the brand Ricard is the leader of the aniseed.
When in France the wormwood or absinthe was banned in 1916, the largest producers (Pernod and Ricard, which then merged into the Pernod Ricard) reformulated the recipe by introducing star anise, green anise and licorice, adding sugar and reducing the alcohol content to Maximum permitted by law. Since then the recipe has changed considerably and each brand has its recipe. Most of them also incorporate fennel.
