El Bierzo is a region located in the west of the province of León. It is one of the best DOs in Spain for its quality in vineyards and winemakers. Raúl Pérez, winemaker at Bodega Castro Ventosa, has been highly praised and recognized for his high-quality vineyards and wines, but with very limited productions.
This winery has been producing wines since 1752, so they have a long history and experience passed down from generation to generation. It is located in Valtuille de Abajo, characterized by a continental-Atlantic climate, at an altitude between 530-628 meters above sea level, and with soils mainly composed of chalk and sand.
The vineyards in this area with 100% Mencía grapes come from vineyards over 80 years old.
The harvest is done manually and then fermented in French oak barrels. Since it is French oak, it transfers its properties more slowly and evenly, helping the wine to be more elegant.
Currently, Castro Ventosa reflects the most traditional spirit of wine production in harmony with the experience inherited from generation to generation. Only the cultivation of their own land guarantees their personality when making their wines, which are the result of the process of fruits that have been passed down from generation to generation, with around 60 hectares of vineyards in the town of Valtuille de Abajo, 80% of which are over 50 years old, with varieties that our ancestors believed were best for their wines. The vineyard is located on the hills of Valtuille de Abajo, with about 300 plots on different soils and orientations, ensuring the organoleptic diversity of their wines. The Pérez family currently runs this winery, with guidance still provided by the renowned winemaker Raúl Pérez.
