Kalamity Blanco 2022 is a white wine from the DOCa Rioja produced by Oxer Wines , the project of winemaker Oxer Bastegieta in Rioja Alavesa. It comes from old vineyards located on hillsides in the area, where the altitude and clay-limestone soils bring freshness and a marked mineral expression to the wine.
The wine is made from an original blend of several traditional white varieties , with a predominance of Viura and Calagraño , complemented with other minority grapes such as Torrontés, Garnacha Blanca, Maturana Blanca and Malvasía. After whole cluster pressing, fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts and the wine is aged for 10 months in large French oak barrels , which provides structure and complexity without losing freshness.
The nose presents aromas of white fruit, citrus and flowers , accompanied by spicy notes and a mineral background. The palate is fresh, vibrant and very long , with marked acidity and an elegant texture reminiscent of the great terroir whites. It is an ideal gastronomic wine to accompany fish, seafood, rice dishes or Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.
Conceived by Oxer Bastegieta, Kalamity was born in the 2014 vintage to be the expression of his best vineyards cultivated in Ellvillar and Cárdenas. This modern-style Rioja is on its way to make history, as shown by the successive high Parker scores obtained since that inaugural harvest. The current one, as Luis Gutiérrez ensures in his review for The Wine Advocate, is not only the best to date, on the verge of reaching the desired 100 points, but it is also Bastegieta's favorite for its floral character and the quality of the tannins.
