Tokaji Oremus Aszú 6 Puttonyos 2013 is one of the great sweet wines of the world, produced by Oremus , the Tokaj estate owned by the prestigious Vega Sicilia group in the historic Tokaj region of Hungary. This wine belongs to the legendary Tokaji Aszú tradition, a style that for centuries has been considered among the most noble wines of Europe.
The wine is made from grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea , also known as noble rot, which dehydrates the berries and concentrates their sugars, flavours and acidity. These berries, known as aszú berries , are harvested individually by hand and added to a base wine where they macerate, releasing their intense aromas and sweetness.
The designation “6 Puttonyos” represents the highest traditional level of concentration in the classic Tokaji scale, indicating very high sweetness and remarkable complexity. After fermentation, the wine ages for several years in Hungarian oak barrels in Oremus’ historic underground cellars carved into volcanic rock, where the natural conditions allow for slow and harmonious development.
On the nose it displays remarkable aromatic complexity with notes of dried apricot, honey, orange peel and candied fruit , accompanied by hints of saffron, caramel, sweet spices and subtle nutty nuances. On the palate it is rich, silky and beautifully balanced , with deep sweetness supported by vibrant acidity and an exceptionally long finish.
It pairs wonderfully with foie gras, blue cheeses, fruit-based desserts and fine pastries , and can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative dessert wine. Thanks to its concentration and balance, it also has outstanding ageing potential , capable of developing for decades in bottle.
