Cauca is a Colombian department, inhabited by a large proportion of indigenous people. Cauca is the Colombian leader in the production of high-quality coffees. The fair trade coffee Alternative3 is cultivated by the cooperative, Central Cooperative Indigenous of Cauca (CENCOIC) an organization of coffee producers founded in 1980. The organization obtained the Fair Trade Coffee certification in 1995 and, thanks to this, has been able to defend small coffee-producing families from the abuses of dominant multinational coffee companies.
