WINEMAKER'S DESCRIPTION
Mandolás is a wine against the current: it is the dry white wine that we have been producing since 2000 at the Oremus winery, located in the historic Hungarian region of Tokaj, famous for its sweet wines. The furmint, a native grape renowned for naturally sweet wines, offers a new interpretation in Mandolás: a dry wine with aging potential. The perfect harmony of an ancient tradition with the most modern precision oenology. Mandolás vineyards are located on the most outstanding soils and landscapes, planted with the best furmint clones from the Petrács plot, an old vineyard of the winery with over 50 years.
When the grapes offer balance and perfect ripeness, the clusters are handpicked with a first selection on the vines. After a light pressing, alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks in 85% and in new Hungarian oak barrels in 15%. During the aging period, 70% of the wine remains in Hungarian oak barrels for the first three months with weekly lees stirring (batonnage) and then for the following three months in complete tranquility. The remaining 30% of the wine ages in stainless steel.
The alternation between cold and warm weather characterized the 2023 vintage. Mandolás Furmint is a young, fruity wine, with fresh nose and aroma, yet the wine has body and speaks with lively acidity. Thanks to the precise harvest of our vineyards, we can maintain this interesting tension between body and acidity in Mandolás.
VINEYARD CYCLE
Winter was one of the mildest in recent years, especially January, with unusually mild temperatures. Winter precipitation was abundant, so the vineyards had good water reserves. March started cold, delaying bud break by about three days compared to the average. Plant development was slow due to that cool spring, until late May when the arrival of warm weather intensified vine growth. Rain was lacking during spring, especially in May.
Flowering began in early June, but the cool weather in mid-month prolonged the process. July, dry and warm, advanced ripening by a few days. August was a month of two faces like the year, with the first cold weeks followed by an exceptionally hot second half of the month, with a heatwave that halted ripening and sugar accumulation, delaying the harvest. Fortunately, the dry weather during those weeks prevented the appearance of botrytis fungus, so it did not interfere in this prolonged harvest.
