Coenzyme Q-10 is a member of a biologically important family of compounds called ubiquinones. In humans, CoQ10 is present in all cells of the body but is found in greater amounts in tissues that require a lot of energy (such as the heart, liver, kidneys, and skeletal muscle). Ubiquinones are insoluble in water and participate in a variety of oxidation/reduction reactions. CoQ10 has a cycle in its oxidized form (ubiquinone) and reduced form (ubiquinol), it is a simple cycle, ubiquinone picks up electrons and becomes ubiquinol. Ubiquinone has to convert to ubiquinol to be absorbed by intestinal cells (enterocytes). Ubiquinol releases the electrons and becomes ubiquinone again. This is important because electron transfer is a fundamental step in energy production in the cell, in the regeneration of antioxidants in the cell membrane, and in the building of other biological molecules. The absorption of Coenzyme Q-10 in ubiquinone form is limited. It is best taken with meals and is considered to have an absorption of 2-3% of the total dose. Usage: Take one pearl a day with food or a glass of water.
