The Sweet Potato is a tropical or subtropical plant, belonging to the Convulvulaceae family. It needs a warm climate. If it is too cold it is detrimental to it, it freezes. In Latin America it is better known by batata or camote.It is native to tropical America, it is part of its most basic diet and from there it spread to the Antilles. The Spanish colonizers took it to the Philippine Islands and the Malucas Islands. Later, Portuguese sailors brought it to India, China and Japan, and in countries such as Mexico it is an essential part of the diet of its people, especially children, as they make jams, marmalades, compotes and desserts with it. Also in Peru it is widely used and in the USA. In Spain, sweet potatoes are linked to the idea of Christmas, due to the tradition of the chestnut sellers, who sell chestnuts and sweet potatoes in the streets: China, Uganda, Nigeria, Indonesia, Rwanda, Rwanda, Vietnam, India and Japan. |
