  • At the end of 2013, Plátano de Canarias received the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) certification, becoming the only banana in the world to have this recognition. This distinction guarantees the uniqueness and origin of our bananas, recognizing Plátano de Canarias as a unique and high-quality product.

The Canary Island banana is not only a fruit with a delicious and unique flavor, but it also has numerous advantages. Whatever your needs may be, it adapts to help you cover what you need in your daily life. That is why the Canary Island banana is not just a nutritious fruit: the Canary Island banana is simply good for everyone.

DIFERENCES BETWEEN THE CANARY ISLAND BANANA AND THE BANANA

The Canary Island bananas differ in their sweeter taste, their aroma, and their distinctive specks.

This is due to their higher moisture content, which means they are much juicier than bananas, which are drier and have a more starchy texture due to their composition of carbohydrates, soluble sugars, and sucrose.

The reasons for these differences are primarily:

  • Banana cultivation in the Canary Islands is traditional and carried out by small producers. Unlike bananas, the Canary Island banana is not owned by large multinational companies that control production in third countries, but it is the brand that unites 8,000 independent producers who cultivate in 9,100 hectares on 6 islands in the Canary Islands. The subtropical and mild climate of the Canary Islands also plays a role in this chapter, allowing the degree of ripeness to be gradually achieved with a longer stay on the plant compared to bananas (6 months vs 3 months). This gives our banana a higher degree of ripeness, flavor, and aroma.
  •  The Canary Island banana is European production and as such, unlike bananas, its production is linked to the phytosanitary, environmental, and food safety control standards of the European Union, which are much more demanding than the countries of origin of its competitors, which are mainly Ecuador, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon.
