There are more than 1,600 species in the Rutaceae family and there are 20 species in the Citrus genus alone.There are 4 basic varieties of mandarins: satsumas, clementines, clemenvillas and hybrids. We refer to the characteristics of the most common mandarins on the market in each variety:Satsumas: They have a poor palate but are the first to reach the market
- Okitsu /Owari: few seeds, medium size, good flavour, good conservation, one of the first of the season
- Clausellina: low quality, poor palate, early in the season

Ortanique: the latest ones. Medium-large size, a little flattened. Lots of juice, sweet. Difficult to peel. Intense colour. The fortuna is another hybrid variety of smaller size

Tips for buying them: When buying them, choose the heaviest ones, because they will be the juiciest. It is also advisable to pay attention to the varieties available throughout the season and their quality/price ratio according to our tastes. Preservation: They keep perfectly well in the fridge for 2 weeks. Do not freeze. Keep preferably in the less cold part of the fridge for short periods. For longer periods they can be chilled to 3/5º C.
