The banana originated in Asia: It reached the Mediterranean coasts in the year 650 and the Canary Islands in the fifteenth century. From the Canary Islands it reached America in 1516, where it was renamed banana and became one of the staple foods of tropical and Caribbean countries. With the variety of plantains (they are cooked, less sweet and bigger) they accompany almost all their dishes (like rice for Asians). In Europe, on the other hand, we eat bananas raw (dwarf banana), as a dessert. From the Canary Islands began to be marketed from the late nineteenth century. The main banana producing countries are the tropical and Caribbean countries of South America and to a much lesser extent, in Southeast Asia
