Elaboration and aging
Viña Tondonia Reserva is a blend of the Tempranillo (75%), Garnacha (15%), Graciano, and Mazuelo (10%) grape varieties. Harvest characteristics: Year classified as EXCELLENT by the Regulatory Council of Rioja. The amount harvested in the approximately 154 hectares of vineyard in operation during the year 2001, corresponding to the four estates, was 892,065 kilograms of grapes. The quality was extraordinary because the summer was very dry and, consequently, not very prone to the development of parasitic pests and fungal diseases. The fruit arrived at the winery in perfect health conditions. The harvest began with the white grapes on Monday, October 8th, and with the red grapes a week later, on the 15th, a normal date for Rioja Alta. It lasted 21 days, with relatively good weather, and concluded on October 29th. The grapes showed excellent fruit ripening, perhaps even excessive in our area, which, located in Rioja Alta, at the limit of vine cultivation due to reasons, fundamentally, of solar influence. The resulting wines have great balance and indicate very good and long bottle aging.
Aging in barrel: 6 years, with 2 rackings per year. Clarified with fresh egg whites. Aging in bottle: The remainder, bottled without filtration, in 75 and 37.5 cl bottles.
