Áster Finca El Otero 2019 is the flagship wine of Áster winery , located in Anguix (Burgos) within the Ribera del Duero DO. The winery belongs to the prestigious La Rioja Alta S.A. group , and this wine represents the pure expression of its single vineyard El Otero , a 7.5-hectare estate planted mainly with Tempranillo at around 850 metres above sea level.
The vines, many more than 50 years old, grow on poor and dry soils that limit yields and enhance grape concentration. Combined with the region’s continental climate, these conditions produce wines with remarkable intensity, structure and ageing potential.
The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates and carefully sorted. After a cold maceration period, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels , where it continues ageing for around 16 months , gaining complexity and refinement before bottling.
On the nose it reveals complex aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant , together with hints of tobacco, white pepper, nutmeg and liquorice , supported by subtle notes of cedar, mocha and forest floor from oak ageing.
On the palate it is powerful, structured and elegant , with polished tannins, deep fruit concentration and a long finish marked by spice, balsamic and mineral nuances. It is a wine with excellent ageing potential , capable of evolving gracefully for many years.
It pairs beautifully with red meats, roast lamb, suckling pig, game dishes and aged cheeses.
