The Banana is native to Asia: It arrived on the Mediterranean coasts in the year 650 and to the Canary Islands in the 15th century. From the Canary Islands, it reached America in 1516, where its name was changed to banana and it became one of the staple foods of tropical and Caribbean countries. With the variety of plantains (they are cooked, less sweet, and larger), they accompany almost all their dishes (like rice for Asians). In contrast, in Europe we eat raw bananas (dwarf bananas) as a dessert. It started to be commercialized from the late 19th century onwards. The main banana-producing countries are the tropical and Caribbean countries of South America and to a much lesser extent, Southeast Asia. |
