Camellia Sinensis originated in China when its commercialization reached western markets, particularly England and Ireland. During transportation, its leaves would oxidize, leading to the discovery of a new tea. This turned black tea into a beverage of status and high social position, to the point that it became a luxury only affordable to the British upper classes and royalty.
