Riet Vell legumes are grown in the environment of seasonal wetlands in the heart of the plains of La Mancha, favoring the conservation of these unique natural spaces.
Riet Vell currently markets Pardina lentils, Castilian lentils, and Pedrosillano chickpeas as a result of an agreement with the Global Nature Foundation (FGN), an NGO that has been working with the primary sector in these areas for many years to achieve their protection and conservation of their biodiversity. The production fields of the legumes are located between the provinces of Toledo, Ciudad Real, and Cuenca, and the packaging plant is located in the town of Villacañas, in Toledo.
Organic cultivation of legumes in these areas is a fundamental element of the ecosystem in very well-preserved natural spaces that host a rich and diverse biological diversity. In addition, they helpimprove the quality of the water that reaches the lagoons and naturally enrich the soil, avoiding contamination with chemical fertilizers. It is also important to remember that legumes are a source of plant-based protein and a key element in a healthy and sustainable diet.
The fields of organic lentils and chickpeas are used by numerous bird species, such as bustards, little bustards, marsh harriers, or cranes, some of which are highly threatened. This circumstance justifies, among many other reasons, the inclusion of these areas in the Natura 2000 Network.
