Gran Reserva 890 2010 is one of the most iconic wines produced by La Rioja Alta S.A. , a historic Rioja winery founded in 1890. The name “890” refers to the year of the winery’s foundation and represents the estate’s most classic and long-lived wine, produced only in exceptional vintages and crafted in a traditional style that defines the great age-worthy wines of Rioja.

The grapes come mainly from selected vineyards in Rioja Alta , particularly in areas such as Villalba, Briñas and Rodezno , where clay-limestone soils and an Atlantic-influenced climate allow for slow and balanced ripening. The blend is dominated by Tempranillo , providing elegance and structure, complemented by small amounts of Graciano and Mazuelo , which add freshness, complexity and ageing potential.

The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in American oak barrels crafted in the winery’s own cooperage , where it remains for approximately six years , undergoing traditional rackings by candlelight. This extended ageing gives the wine remarkable aromatic complexity and refinement.

The 2010 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest in Rioja in recent decades, known for its balance, concentration and ageing potential. On the nose the wine displays complex aromas of ripe black fruits, plum and cherry , alongside notes of tobacco, leather, sweet spices, vanilla, cocoa and cedar.
