Leukade 2016 is one of the most exclusive wines produced by Bodegas Murua , part of the Masaveu Bodegas group. It comes from the Lekuade vineyard , a single estate located near Elciego in Rioja Alavesa , one of the most renowned areas of Rioja. This wine represents the pure expression of the vineyard’s terroir and is produced only in selected vintages.
The vineyard is planted mainly with Tempranillo , complemented by small amounts of Graciano and Mazuelo , traditional Rioja varieties that add freshness, complexity and ageing potential to the blend. The vines grow on clay-limestone soils , typical of the region and well suited for producing structured and elegant wines.
The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected both in the vineyard and at the winery. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel and is then aged for around 18 months in French oak barrels , where it develops complexity and structure.
On the nose it shows aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackberry and plum , accompanied by hints of spice, cocoa, liquorice and subtle balsamic notes. On the palate it is deep, elegant and structured , with refined tannins, balanced acidity and a long finish marked by mineral and spicy nuances.
This wine has excellent ageing potential and pairs beautifully with red meats, roast lamb, game dishes and aged cheeses.
