At Marqués de Riscal there were winemaker's wines within its Reserva Histórica, such as Reserva Medoc and XR, but they were not commercial names. In the style of the Bordeaux foremen, the cellar master wrote the word XR with chalk on the barrels in which he found some special characteristics that were not found in others. These wines were never marketed, but they were always a reference for the cellar master. This custom lasted almost a century, between the vintages of 1869 and 1964.
