Protos Gran Reserva 2017 is made from 100% Tempranillo grapes from very old vines, over 60 years old. These vines give low yields of concentrated grapes, ideal for producing long aging wines such as this one. The grapes are harvested by hand in 20 kg crates. Once in the winery, the grapes go through a selection table. Maceration with the skins and fermentation for 28 days at 28ºC. Finally, the wine was aged for 24 months in French (80%) and American (20%) oak and a further 36 months in bottle.
Protos was -with the exception of Vega Sicilia- the first winery in Ribera del Duero. It was founded in 1927 after the union of 11 winegrowers, and was one of the wineries that promoted the creation of the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin in 1982. It is located in Peñafiel, where the old winery stands at the foot of the Castle, with 2 km of galleries carved into the mountain perfect for aging wines. The new Protos winery, designed by Richard Rogers, is connected to the old winery by a subway tunnel.
Bodegas Protos knows that to achieve quality it is essential to have first-class grapes. For this reason, while the regulations of D.O. allow a yield of up to 7,000 kg of grapes per hectare, Protos requires a maximum of 5,000 kg. In addition, it has an enormous viticultural potential that allows it to use each cluster for a specific type of wine. Another pillar of its philosophy is the constant renewal of its barrels.
Protos Gran Reserva is made only in excellent vintages. It is a 100% Tempranillo with five years of aging between barrel and bottle. Expressive, powerful, long and silky, it is a Ribera of unquestionable quality, as reflected in the scores of all the critics who have evaluated it. The Protos Gran Reserva 2017 red wine (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is ideal with roasted meats, lamb, pork or beef. It also harmonizes with stews and casseroles, big game, cured cheeses.
