Despite being a modest plant, brecina is especially effective in the treatment of urinary tract inflammations (it is antiseptic and urinary sedative), prostate hypertrophy, stones and renal affections. The generic name Calluna derives from the Greek kallyno meaning to clean or sweep, as this plant was commonly used in certain localities to make brooms.
The plant is also used in the treatment of urinary tract inflammations
In some regions of Central Europe, brecina is used for the preparation of herbal teas as a substitute for tea. Therapeutically, some species of the genus Erica (Erica herbacea) are also used for the same applications, as they possess similar properties; species of both genera are melliferous and ornamental. Due to its richness in flavonoids, it is used to combat capillary fragility
