There is no clear explanation for the origin of the denomination Tripel. While some claim that it depends on the intensity of the wort or the amount of alcohol, others point out that its name only responds to the enumeration of the recipes imposed in the Westmalle Trappist monastery. What is clear is that it was in this abbey where the first Dubbel and Tripel were born. The way to mark these stronger beers than the enkel or patersbier and the dubbel was by adding "XXX" on the barrel to distinguish them.
