Pétalos del Bierzo is a renowned red wine produced in the D.O. Bierzo by the prestigious winery Descendientes de J. Palacios. This exceptional wine is primarily crafted from the Mencía grape variety, supplemented by a small proportion of white grapes like Alicante Bouschet. This wine is the result of a perfect blend, as half of the grapes come from selected vineyards in the municipality of Corullón, while the other half is sourced from various vineyards situated on poorer hilltops in municipalities such as Valtuille, Villadecanes, Paradones, and Villafranca del Bierzo. The grapes are harvested from small parcels of old vines aged between 50 and 90 years that yield low production. Pétalos del Bierzo is characterized by its aging in barrels for 4 months, which imparts an aromatic character of fruits like cherry and blackberry, along with floral notes that add great fragrance to the wine. Tasting reveals a beautiful dark cherry color, clear and bright, with violet edges. Its tears are fine and fall slowly, indicating quality. On the nose, the wine is intense with a marked varietal character, showcasing a lot of ripe red and black fruit. Over time, it also reveals a surprising minerality and subtle toasty notes complemented by a light background of scrub and underbrush. On the palate, Pétalos del Bierzo is expressive and flavorful, with a good attack and a long, velvety, fresh, and intense journey. Floral and spicy notes intertwine with good acidity and polished tannins, culminating in a long and persistent finish.
