After a long search in several Chilean regions, François planted his vineyards in 2000 in a virgin terroir, with poor soil and a healthy and balanced climate. Today, the winery has 28 hectares of vineyards and Lolol is recognized as an appellation of origin. The choice of this location has proved to be a wise decision thanks to its climatic conditions and the terroir, with its granitic soils. The wines produced here have a unique personality. Today François Lurton continues to explore different possibilities, especially by planting at altitude with varieties that require cooler climates, such as Sauvignon or even Pinot Noir. The aim is to produce wines of race, authentic and original.
Hacienda Araucano is located very close to the historic town of Lolol, in the Colchagua Valley, 2 hours by road from Santiago, on Route 5 south. Santa Cruz, the nearest town, is 30 km to the west. The winery is located in a valley that extends from east to west and receives cold air from the Pacific Ocean. The difference in temperature between the sea and the land causes a white haze, the "white smoke", which can be seen every morning just above the vineyards. The climate is hot and very dry during the day but the ocean winds and morning mists from the Pacific (only 40 km away) cool the atmosphere and mitigate the heat.
