Ardbeg 5 Years Old is one of the peatiest single malts distilled in the Islay area. The distillery that produces it is located by the sea on a small island of 3,000 inhabitants in the southwest of Scotland.
Ardbeg was the first whisky to travel into space: the distillery was the first to experiment with extraterrestrial ageing when it sent some of its production to the International Space Station in 2011 to examine the effects of weightlessness on flavour.
Ardbeg's two stills produce one million litres of spirit a year, which is only available as Single Malt. The whisky is aged mainly in Bourbon casks, with a small portion in sherry casks. It is peaty, but does not have the same marine character as many Islay whiskies; Ardbeg is known for its smoky, spicy and sweet character.
