Ashwagandha or Withania somnifera is an evergreen shrub of Indian origin that grows in Asia and Africa. Since historical times it has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for various therapeutic purposes and is characterised by its high healing power and as a powerful natural revitaliser.

Traditionally, ashwagandha has been used as a relaxant and antispasmodic for vascular smooth muscles. It also improves states of anxiety, nervous hyperexcitability, asthenia, mild hypertension and type 2 diabetes. In Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is considered to have a tonic, astringent, aphrodisiac and nervous sedative action.
