Contributes to liver protection.
Milk thistle is a herbaceous plant of the asteraceae family. It has characteristic bright green leaves with spiny lobes and deep pink flowers with bracts. The active part of the plant are the seeds, which are very rich in silymarin, the main active substance of this plant and which is made up of different flavanolignan molecules. It also contains flavonoids and other essential nutrients such as sterols and mucilages.
Traditionally, milk thistle has been used as an antioxidant and anti-hepatotoxic (preventing liver damage). This action is achieved on the one hand by preventing the penetration of toxic agents into the cell (modifying its external structure) and, on the other hand, by stimulating the activity of substances that stimulate the regeneration of new cells in the liver, which is useful in cases of liver inflammation and promotes the proper functioning of this organ. Milk thistle is also a free radical scavenger in the body. Prophylactic use of milk thistle is more effective than therapeutic use, once liver damage has already occurred. Experience has also demonstrated its ability to be used in patients with gastrointestinal disorders, reducing bloating and relieving feelings of tension and flatulence in the gastrointestinal tract, while increasing appetite and physical capacity. It has also been shown to have anti-cholesterolaemic and anti-cholestatic activity.
