Helps maintain bowel regularity.
Cascara sagrada is a plant native to the Americas and belongs to the Rhamnaceae family. Its name comes from the false belief that this plant was actually a tree and that its bark was used to make Noah's Ark. The active part of this plant is the bark, which is very rich in hydroxyanthracene heterosides, mainly glucosilantrones and glycosides. The most important of these are the cascarosides, the substances with physiological action. It also contains anthraquinones and anthrones.
Traditionally, cascara sagrada has been used as a short-term laxative (in cases of occasional constipation). Its action lies in the ability of these substances to modify their structure in the large intestine by breaking down the molecules and the action of the intestinal flora in the area. This metabolic action favours an increase in peristaltic movement (typical of the gut) and a greater secretion of water and electrolytes from the mucosa to the outside, favouring evacuation.
