Horsetail is a perennial shrub of the Equisetaceae family. It comes from the northern hemisphere and its name is due to the shape of its empty stems, which have narrow leaves that may resemble the tails of horses. The active part of this plant is the stems, which contain abundant mineral salts, especially silicic ones. It also contains sterols, caffeic acid, phenolic acids (cinnamic, dicaffeoyltartaric and caffeoylshikimic), and is rich in flavonoids.
Traditionally, horsetail has been used as a mild diuretic (reducing fluid accumulation in the body, a useful effect in cases of hypertension and overweight), haemostatic (balancing blood volumes) and remineralising (due to its high concentration of silicon). It is also believed that these silicic compounds contribute to maintaining the fundamental structure of connective tissue (collagen) and that it interacts with phosphate and calcium metabolism.
