Production in Colombia is heavily dominated by smallholders who join together in Cooperatives and producer associations. This means that the vast majority of coffee in Colombia comes in large lots containing coffee from many producers. This is further complicated by the fact that the coffee is mainly processed on the farm by the producers. Depending on the mindset and skill of the individual producer, you can have great coffee mixed with average coffee.
Different climates present challenges for smallholder farmers to harvest and process their crops under stable conditions. The geography of the land creates an environment where we see multiple harvests occurring at various times across different coffee growing regions. We are continually working with our export partners to find growers with good practices and methods to produce consistent, high quality coffees.
