The legend of Basque mythology says that Amalur, Mother Earth, gave her children the sun (eguzki) and the moon (ilargia - dead light), so they could defend themselves against the evil beings that inhabited the earth.
But on moonless nights, these beings would enter their homes and take their children. So Amalur gave them Eguzkilore, the flower of the sun, to be placed at the entrance of their homes.
And the evil being had to count the hairs on the leaves of the flower in order to enter, but there were so many and it took so long that dawn would come and they had to leave, leaving the home protected.
Hundreds of homes in the Basque Country still maintain this ancient tradition.
