Echinacea is a perennial herbaceous plant of the asteraceae family. It owes its name "echi" to the spiny central part of the flower. The active part of the plant is the aerial parts, which contain alkylamides, caffeic acid derivatives (especially achichoric and tartaric acid), polysaccharides (arabinogalactans, xyloglucans and pectic acid), as well as flavonoids, essential oils, polyacetylenes and hydroxycinnamic acid.

Traditionally, echinacea has been used as an adjuvant in the treatment and prophylaxis of chronic recurrent infections of the upper respiratory tract (such as the common cold) as well as the urogenital tract.
