Hawthorn is a deciduous tree or shrub of the rosaceae family. It is closely associated with the Celts and the mysticism that surrounds their folklore. In fact, it is considered a sacred tree. The active part of this shrub is the flowering tops, which contain flavonoids and proanthocyanidins. The former include the heterosides, apigenin and quercetin; the latter include pycnogenols. Caffeic and chlorogenic acids, aromatic amines, triterpenic acids and mineral salts are also present.

Traditionally, hawthorn has been used as a cardiotonic and anti-arrhythmic, as it increases the force of cardiac contraction (inotropic) and reduces the excitability of the heart (negative batmotropic). It also has a cardioprotective and antioxidant effect by inhibiting the activity of certain enzymes and the synthesis of substances in the heart muscle.
