Fucus is a brown seaweed from rocky coasts, from the fucaceae family, which owes its name to the presence of gas vesicles in its morphology. The active part of the algae are the perennial stems, which contain mucilaginous polysaccharides and mineral salts. It is a remineralising species, the most important mineral, which gives the seaweed its medicinal meaning, being iodine.

Traditionally, thanks to the presence of iodine, bladderwrack has been used as a metabolic activator, promoting weight reduction by increasing calorie burning. It has also been shown to have a satiating effect due to inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Several studies also suggest that it can be used as a palliative for the symptoms of skin ageing, preventing the thinning of the dermis and increasing its elasticity.
