Ginkgo is a very particular and unique deciduous tree of the ginkgoaceae family. It is described as a living fossil from China, where its name means "silver apricot", and it is also known as the "40-shekel tree" because of the economic value paid for it in Europe. The active part of this plant is the leaves, which contain phenolic compounds (ilavonols such as quercetin and kemferol), hydroxycinnamates, apigenin biflawnas (such as bilobetin, ginkgetin and scycypilysin), oligomeric proanthocyanidins, terpene lactones (such as ginkgolides and bilobalide sesquiterpene) and phytosterols.

Traditionally, ginkgo has been used as a vessel regulator (arterial vasodilator, venous vasoconstrictor, capillary resistance enhancer, increased blood flow), platelet antiaggregant, increases tolerance to anoxia and tripoxia (increases glucose and oxygen uptake and reduces cerebral oxygen requirements), antioxidant (captures free radicals and inhibits the generation of reactive oxygen species) and neuroprotective. At the auditory level, it improves the ultrastructural quality of the vestibular sensory epithelium, modulating capillary permeability and general microcirculation.
