More information

Grapes belong to the family of Vitaceae and the genus of Vitis. They require a warm climate for their cultivation. The fermentation of this fruit gives rise to wine, a magical elixir and delight for many. It is believed to have originated in the Caspian Sea area in Asia and spread from there to all countries along the Mediterranean coast. Grapes are believed to be the first fruit cultivated by humans, and there is evidence that they were cultivated throughout Europe during the prehistoric period. In fact, the Greeks and especially the Romans made a true cult of wine. Grapes were brought to America by Spanish colonizers. They spread, but they contracted a disease due to an insect and were destroyed. One of these insects (the phylloxera) reached Europe and caused a huge plague, leaving all vineyards destroyed or damaged. As a result, they had to use an American vine, which had become immune to the disease, to reproduce the European vines. Currently, grapes are grown in warm regions, but in 1800 they were even cultivated in northern regions of Europe, leading to the creation of greenhouses, where they built glass structures with heating to maintain the grapes at the ideal temperature. The main grape-producing countries are: Australia, Europe (Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Turkey, Greece), America (California, Chile, Argentina), and South Africa. The majority of grape harvests are used for winemaking. Its consumption is very important worldwide, and it is increasingly valued and consumed.
