Devil's claw is a herbaceous plant of the Pedaliaceae family. It is commonly known as "devil's claw", due to the woody capsule shape of its fruits. The active part of this plant is the secondary roots, which contain a high proportion of iridoids. The main iridoids are harpagoside, together with small amounts of coumaroyl-harpagide, procumbide and coumaroyl-ester. It also contains sugars, phytosterols, flavonoids, phenolic acids and traces of essential oil.
Traditionally, devil's claw has been used as an anti-inflammatory (especially in acute and chronic inflammation) and analgesic. It can also be considered as an aperitif, due to some of the bitter principles it contains, and as a choleretic (increasing bile production in the liver).
