Hypericum is a shrub of European origin from the Hypericaceae family, the most abundant species of this family. Its name comes from the property attributed to this herb of warding off evil spirits and apparitions. The flowers used to be hung over religious icons on St. John's Day. The active part of this shrub is the flowering tops, which contain naphthodianthrones, mainly hypericin, pseudohypericin and isohypericin, the first being the most active, and of which it is standardised. It also contains flavonoids, bisflavones, caffeic acid derivatives, proanthocyanidols, phytosterols, hyperforin and coumarins, among others.
Traditionally, hypericum has been used to improve symptoms associated with psychosomatic disturbances, mild and moderate depressive disorders, anxiety and nervous fatigue. Externally, it is also used as a healing agent for treating wounds, skin ulcers, burns and eczema.
