Lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables in our diet and stands out for its use as a salad ingredient. The best known varieties of lettuce are:

• Iceberg: compact head with round and crisp leaves, grown in the Campo de Cartagena, the Guadalentín Valley,  Águilas and Alicante.
• Little gem or buds
• Curly leaf: loose or separate leaves.
• Romana: elongated leaves, with entire edges and very wide central nerve, or Miniromana, of smaller caliber.
• Stem or lstemmed lettuce: leaves with an unpleasant flavor.
• Simpson - Oak: black and dark seeded.

The leaves contain a lot of fiber, properties against anemia and weakness; they are also diuretic, help to reconcile sleep and cure mild bronchitis. They also contain vitamin A, in the greener leaves, and potassium, so they have antioxidant properties.
