Maca is a herbaceous plant native to the Andes mountains in Peru. Hence the name "Andean maca". Its root was used to improve the physical and mental capacities of the ancient inhabitants, both the natives and the Spanish expeditionaries. The dried root contains macaenes and macamides, which correspond to certain unsaturated fatty acids. It also contains glucosinolates or sulphocyanogenic heterosides, sterols, catechins and various vitamins (vitamin B2, vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin K).

Traditionally, maca has been used as an antioxidant, immunostimulant (by increasing white blood cells), in anaemia, tuberculosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, improving memory and cognitive function), menstrual disorders, menopausal symptoms, stomach cancer, sterility and other reproductive and sexual disorders, such as impotence and sexual dysfunction. It also increases spermatogenesis.
