It is named after a Galician travador from the 13th century, whose poems evoke gallant love and passion for the sea.
The "Martín Códax" cantigas are the oldest of all the Galician-Portuguese of which their original music is preserved. The manuscript that contains them, known as "Vindel Parchment", is preserved in the Morgan Library in New York.
