Lemon balm is a perennial herbaceous herb that flowers in summer. It is native to the Mediterranean basin and has become naturalised throughout temperate Europe. It grows in meadows, forests, river banks or cultivated fields, where the soil is rich in organic matter. Its leaves contain essential oil (consisting mainly of monoterpene aldehydes, such as neral, geranial and citronellal), hydroxycinnamic derivatives (including caffeic and chlorogenic acids, and in particular rosmarinic acid), triterpenes (ursolic and oleanolic acids) and flavonoids (luteolin glycosides, quedcetin, apigenin and kenferol).
Traditionally, lemon balm has been used as a spasmolytic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. The essential oil has antibacterial and antifungal activity. The activity of hydroalcoholic extracts of lemon balm leaf in cognitive disorders is related to its ability to inhibit cholinesterase, free radical scavenging, anti-inflammation, inhibition of amyloid neurotoxicity, glucoregulation, activation of GABAergic receptors (such as y-aminobutyric acid) and signalling pathways such as kinases.
