Due to the way it is obtained, refined coconut oil is not recommended for consumption, as its healthy properties are lost during extraction and its composition is altered. Thus, by refining it, part or all of its lauric acid, one of the most important fatty acids in extra virgin coconut oil and to which it owes many of its qualities, may be lost.
