Ossian 2022 is the representation of a small universe of plots of the Verdejo variety that guard centuries of viticultural tradition in the surroundings of the Voltoya terraces. Vineyards up to 200 years old that hold the witness of the singularity of their varietal richness and of an almost extinct reality. Ossian is a historic legacy.

Ossian 2022 represents a small universe of unique plots that guard centuries of winemaking tradition in the surroundings of the Voltoya terraces. Vineyards up to 200 years old that bear witness to the singularity of their varietal richness and an almost extinct reality. Ossian is a historical legacy. This 2022 vintage maintains the elegance, complexity, and freshness of a pre-phylloxera verdejo. A landscape that preserves the historical reality of Segovian verdejo for hundreds of years. Genetic diversity hidden in each vine. Surprising delicacy. Length in a rested finish that once again reveals the character of authentic verdejo.

An extreme climatic year

The last quarter of 2021 was rainy and with mild temperatures. The beginning of 2022 continued the rhythm of the previous months, with few days of extreme cold and very scarce rainfall. Bud break started at the end of March, but the vines did not sprout until the end of April due to low spring precipitation. May was atypical, with high temperatures, causing rapid phenological growth of the vine that accompanied an equally rapid flowering in mid-June with correct fruit set. The summer was extremely dry and hot, with different heatwaves, causing occasional moments of stress in some of the younger plants. These cycle characteristics also allowed the health status to remain perfect with rapid ripening in August. Harvest began on September 1st and lasted until the 28th of the same month.

Small vineyards on the Voltoya terraces

For the production of Ossian, grapes from a selection of plots surrounding the Voltoya terraces are used: Nieva, Aldeanueva del Codonal, Aldehuela del Codonal, Ochando, Melque de Cercos, Nava de la Asunción, Moraleja de Coca, and Santiuste de San Juan Bautista. The soils mark the radical difference of this environment: the sands and pebbles prevented the arrival of phylloxera. A harsh climate, with cold winters and hot summers, characterizes the development of authentic verdejo. Vines planted centuries ago hold a unique genetic diversity. This biological richness brings greater complexity to the interpretation of each plot.

Parcel vinification

Ossian is the result of the individual vinification blending of each plot. A viticulture that respects the character of vines up to 200 years old. Grapes are harvested in small boxes and after a light pressing, the must is transferred to tanks and barrels of wood ranging from 228 to 600 liters. Indigenous yeasts and spontaneous fermentation reflect the purity and complexity of these grapes over the following weeks. Ossian 2022 was blended and bottled in the summer of 2023 after approximately nine months of aging on its lees. Contains sulfites.
