More information

The erysimum (Sisymbrium officinale) is a medicinal plant traditionally employed for the well-being of the upper and middle respiratory tract. Erissimo derives from the Greek and means "I save the song". Its popular name, weed of the singers, comes from the French name, where, since King Louis XIV, it has been considered an infallible remedy for aphonia and loss of voice.

Erissimo is used for the treatment of aphonia and loss of voice

The erissimo is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the cruciferous family. It is grown in Europe, Asia and North Africa. In Spain we can find it in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, at moderate altitudes. The erissimo has an erect stem, whose height ranges between 30 and 80 centimeters. The leaves have a long petiole and are divided into several segments. The flowers are small, yellow in color. The fruits are pods so sharp that they look like punctures. The appearance of the singers' weedreminds that of the mustard.

Also called St. Albert's weed, the erissimo blooms in April and its flowering lasts well into the summer. It is during its flowering that the plant is harvested, which we use whole.

It contains an essential oil, mucilage, pectin and heterosides. Its main indication is as a balm to mediate in laryngeal catarrh and cure hoarseness or aphonia. The renewed Dioscorides collects the old anecdote of the doctor who supplied a tisane of erysimum to a singer of Notre Dame (Paris) who had been aphonic for six months: not only regained his voice, but could sing with a verve as he had never had before. This is why this plant is also known as the "herb of the singers."

It is also known as the "herb of the singers"
